How long does the whale need to wait to receive the echo from fish?
In order to locate and find food, sperm whales can emit bursts of sonae waves toward the prey (a process called echolation). The frequency of these waves is about 150kHz. It is found that the compressions and rarefactions within each pulse are spaced 11mm apart.
(a) Using this information, determine the speed of sound in seawater.
(b) A sperm whale emits a pulse toward a schoold of fish 500m away. How long does the whale need to wait before it receives the echo from fish?
i assume from yr statements tat the spacing between each comp and rare = 11m.Therefore wavelength is 22m
speed = freq x wavelength
s = 150×10^3 x 22
= 3.3 x 10^6
t = d/s
= 1000/3.3×10^6
= 3 x 10^-4 s……tats purty fast!!!
